what is bikram yoga

Bikram Yoga is a 90 minutes series of 26 Hatha Yoga postures (“asanas”) and 2 breathing exercises (“prayanama”). It is practiced in a room heated to 40°C and taught by certified teachers. Done in a prescribed order, the series is designed to stretch every system in the body, inside out, from bones to the skin, fingertips to the toes and to flush the toxins out of the body through intense sweating. A regular practice will increase vitality, strength, concentration, balance and well being. Yoga is a 5000-year-old science and it is the best way of improving the body and the mind.

who is bikram ?

Bikram Yoga was founded by Bikram Choudhury, who at the age of 12 was India’s youngest ever national Yoga champion. At 17, Bikram was severely injured in a weight-lifting accident that crushed his knee and was told by doctors he would never walk again. With the help of his guru, Bishnu Ghosh, Bikram restored his health practicing yoga. He created the series of asanas which are now taught at all Bikram Yoga Studios today. With medical experts at Tokyo university, Bikram conducted a three-year research project that provided scientific evidence that Hatha yoga asanas are an aid in preventing degenerative diseases, regenerating tissue and healing chronic ailments. He moved to the United States in 1973, after having been invited by President Richard Nixon. In 1974, Bikram founded the Yoga College of India in the United States. Today there are thousands of studios in the world and millions of people practice Bikram Yoga.

I discovered Bikram yoga while living abroad over 10 years ago. I trained with Bikram Choudhury in 2008 and opened the Bikram Yoga Geneva studio in 2010. Back in Geneva I could not imagine my life without Bikram Yoga!

All our teachers have been certified by Bikram’s yoga college of India. As we truly believe in the method and power of this incredible sequence of yoga postures, we rely only on qualified Bikram yoga teachers to relay you the best experience possible.
